Ponce, Puerto Rico, is historically significant in the development of salsa music as the birthplace of several influential artists. Most notably, the legendary salsa singer Héctor Lavoe was born and raised in the Machuelito sector of Ponce before moving to New York City to launch his career. The city is also the birthplace of other Puerto Rican musical artists, including singer Ednita Nazario.
