Edgardo Armando Franco, professionally known as El General, is a Panamanian artist born on March 27, 1969, in Rio Abajo, Panama. He is widely recognized as one of the primary pioneers of reggae en Español and a foundational architect of reggaeton. His early career played a critical role in translating Caribbean dancehall rhythms into a Spanish-language framework for a global audience.
El General's musical style merged elements of Jamaican dancehall, rap, reggae, calypso, and diverse Latin genres. His versatility extended into Latin tropical music, which included surprising his fans with salsa performances, such as one facilitated by promoter Chino Rodriguez and producer Ralph Mercado. In 2002, he released the album Juntos, showcasing his continued presence in the Latin music landscape before his retirement. His genre-bending work ultimately laid the groundwork for the modern Latin urban music movement.
