Proyecto Uno is a Dominican-American musical group formed in 1989 in New York City's Lower East Side. Founded by Nelson Zapata, the group is credited with pioneering 'merenhouse' (or merengue house), a genre that fuses traditional Dominican merengue with house, hip-hop, techno, and dancehall elements.
During the 1990s, Proyecto Uno achieved recognition for its fusion of Latin rhythms and urban dance music. The group won multiple Billboard Latin Music Awards and Premios Lo Nuestro, and received an Emmy Award nomination. The group was managed by Porfirio 'Popi' Piña, and later by Rafael Zapata III. Early members and collaborators included Rick EchevarrÃa, Johnny Salgado, Randy Ortiz, and Magic Juan (Juan Abreu).
The group's lineup later featured Nelson Zapata, Kid G, and Paolo Tondo. Among their releases is the 2015 album '1.'
