Salsa Celtica is a Scottish musical ensemble formed in 1995 in the bars and clubs of Edinburgh and Glasgow. Led by Toby Shippey, the 11-piece collective features a diverse lineup of musicians from Scotland, Ireland, Venezuela, and Cuba. The group is best known for its innovative fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms—including salsa, cha-cha-cha, and son cubano—with traditional Celtic folk music and elements of jazz.
Their distinctive instrumentation blends Latin percussion, piano, and brass with traditional Scottish and Irish instruments, including bagpipes, fiddles, whistles, and Uilleann pipes. This unique combination merges the energetic drive of classic Latin salsa with the melodic arrangements of Celtic folk traditions.
The group's recording career includes albums such as "The Great Scottish Latin Adventure" (2000) and "El Agua de la Vida" (2003), alongside other releases like "El Camino", "The Tall Islands", and the live album "En Vivo en el Norte". In 2025, the band released "25th Anniversary Big Band Live in Concert", documenting their long-running history and live performance legacy.
