Edwin Perez is a Puerto Rican-American singer, sonero, composer, and producer known for his contributions to the modern salsa dura movement. Born on June 18, 1972, in Caguas, Puerto Rico, Perez grew up there before moving to the Bronx, New York, at the age of 18. He first gained widespread recognition as a lead vocalist for the New York-based salsa band La Excelencia, joining the group after connecting with founders Jose Vazquez-Cofresi and Julian Silva in 2005.
As a bandleader and solo artist, Perez directs a ten-piece ensemble performing a style of salsa dura inspired by the 1970s and 1980s New York sound. His music is characterized by socially conscious lyrics paired with intense horn and percussion arrangements. His solo catalog includes the albums La Voz del Pueblo (2017), Street Corner Chronicles (2020), and Directo al Punto (2022).
In addition to his full-length albums, Perez has released several singles addressing contemporary social themes, such as El Muro (2019), No Puedo Respirar (2020), Econolisis (2020), and Sonero de Que (2021). His active recording career has continued into 2025 with the single releases Isla, Rumba Sin Invitacion, and Consecuencias.
