Born Brenda Joy Kaplan on October 14, 1966, in New York City, Brenda K. Starr is an American singer and songwriter. The daughter of Spiral Starecase member Harvey Kaye, she was raised in New York and made an early career appearance in the 1984 hip-hop film Beat Street. She initially rose to prominence during the mid-1980s as a freestyle, pop, and dance vocalist, releasing her self-titled debut album in 1987.
Starr subsequently transitioned into Latin music, establishing a career as a salsa and Latin pop artist. Her active catalog spans from 1985 through 2024, blending her freestyle roots with salsa. Her recent releases include singles such as "Tu Vida En La MÃa" (2019), "El Pez Muere por la Boca" (2020), "Quedate" (2022), "The Only One I Love" (2022), "Always Remember" (2023), and "Soy Otra Mujer" (2023), alongside her 2021 holiday album, "Brenda K. Starr Christmas Spectacular", and the 2024 live single "BarCode Sessions (En Vivo)".
