Bacalao Men was formed in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1999 when bass player and vocalist Pablo Estacio invited drummer Sebastián Araujo and saxophonist Aurelio Martínez to form a songo-influenced band. The group's musical style integrated elements of salsa and Caribbean rhythms with electronic textures, city sounds, and Latin alternative influences.
Their collaborative jam sessions led to the production of their self-titled debut album, Bacalao Men, which was released independently in 2001 by Obeso/Pacanins. The group continued to develop their catalog, releasing several albums in 2011, including Sabaneando, El Nuevo Bugalu, and another self-titled release.
In subsequent years, Bacalao Men remained active with releases such as the 2015 single El Maletin and the 2018 album Sangre. The band continued to record and perform over the next decade, releasing the single duermes in 2024 and the live recording Bacalao Men live at La Biblioteca Sessions #43 in 2025.
