Plena Libre

Plena Libre is an acclaimed Puerto Rican ensemble founded in San Juan in 1994 by the bassist and bandleader Gary Nuñez. The group specializes in modernizing traditional Afro-Puerto Rican musical styles, particularly plena and bomba. By blending folklore-derived rhythms with contemporary brass arrangements, salsa, jazz, and other Afro-Caribbean genres, the ensemble is widely credited with bringing these traditional styles back to commercial and critical prominence.

Over a career spanning more than three decades, Plena Libre has established a reputation for stellar musicianship and energetic live performances. Their early milestones include the release of the album "Más Libre" under the RykoLatino label in October 2000, which showcased their signature fusion of ancestral percussion with modern jazz elements. In 2016, Gary Nuñez was featured on the single "Por la Ventana."

Plena Libre has continued to remain highly active in the recording studio, releasing substantial albums such as "Amores En El Camino" (2017), "Plena Pa' ti" (2018), and "Cuatro Esquinas" (2023). In addition to full-length albums, the group has issued a consistent stream of singles, including "Tu Cintura Con la Mía" (2022), "Hasta que Amanezca" (2024), and the 2025 releases "A Mi Manera" and "Ganas De Quererte."
