Rubén Blades Bellido de Luna was born on July 16, 1948, in Panama City. He is a Panamanian singer, composer, actor, activist, and politician who became a central figure in the 1970s New York salsa revolution. Blending the lyrical sophistication of Central American nueva canción and Cuban nueva trova with experimental tempos and political themes, Blades helped define a socially conscious, intellectually deep style of salsa. Over his career, he wrote numerous hit songs, including 'Pedro Navaja' and 'El Cantante'.
As a highly decorated artist, Blades has won twelve Grammy Awards out of 21 nominations, as well as twelve Latin Grammy Awards. His landmark recordings showcase a fusion of classic Afro-Cuban salsa with jazz, rock, merengue, son cubano, and other pan-Latin styles. In addition to his musical endeavors, Blades has maintained prominent careers in film acting and Panamanian politics.
Active in the catalog from 1970 through 2026, his expansive discography includes seminal releases such as 'Maestra Vida' (with parts one and two remastered in 2025) and 'Canciones del Solar de los Aburridos' (remastered in 2024). His modern catalog features projects like 'Paraíso Road Gang' (2019), 'SALSWING!' (2021), 'SALSA PLUS!' (2021), 'SWING!' (2021), 'Pasieros' (2022), and 'Parceiros' (2022), as well as 'Siembra: 45° Aniversario (En Vivo en el Coliseo de Puerto Rico, 14 de Mayo 2022)' released in 2023. His recent works include the album 'Fotografías' (2025) and the 2026 single 'SUPERMAMBO'.
